Meeting the Old Man: When the boy and man meet the old man, we see how innocent the boy is, and how he wants to help anyone that needs it, while the man is solely focused on survival. We see the differences between the two approaches.
Bad Guys: In this situation, the boy and his father have their first run-in with danger, and the boy is abducted by one of the thugs. The father is forced to shoot him, showing that he will do anything and kill anyone if it means protecting his son.
Remaining Strong: During this time, the boy tells his father that he wishes he were with his mother, or dead. The father snaps him out of it, and convinces him that he keep moving.
Almost Caught: The two of them come across a seemingly empty house where there are many supplies. The boy is very cautious throughout their whole stay, and with good reason. Some of the cannibals live there, and are keeping live human cattle in their basement. The man and his son are forced to flee.
The Bunker: This is their one huge break. The bunker they come across is loaded with food, water and other essential survival gear. They stay there for several nights and we see another aspect of the boy's purity when he feels bad about taking the food. He then thanks them and tells them that he wouldn't eat any if they were still alive.
The Thief: In this occurrence, they have already arrived at the beach, and went out to look for supplies. When they come back, they see that their stuff is gone, and the father forces the thief to give them everything that he possesses, even his clothes.
Father Dies: This is obviously when the father dies, from disease, and he is forced to leave his child all by himself. He reassures him that he will find the good guys, and continue to carry the fire from within.
Boy finds a new Home: The boy comes across another family, and they offer to take him in.
